In high school, we discussed the story of Pygmalion and Galatea in our literature class. The myth tells the story of a sculptor named Pygmalion who made a statue of a woman whom he made so beautiful that he fell in love with it. Day and night, he treated the statue like a human being by offering food before it and clothing it with elegant drapes. Moved with compassion, Aphrodite turned the statue into a real woman and brought her to Pygmalion. The sculptor named her Galatea and made her his companion.
In UA&P, I am lucky to work with the team which is holding a play entitled Pygmalion, starting this Friday, Feb 22. There, I learned that the main character, a woman, was transformed from her low-class personality into a real, elegant lady. Thus, she is compared to Galatea who transforms from a lifeless mass of stone into a graceful and beautiful maiden. The theme of the article? Transformation. I believe this is the reason why we attend school and universities. We want to be transformed from something that is bland to someone who can face the world with character and intellect. Students leave school as transformed persons who carry in their minds the knowledge of their lessons, the culture of their school and the personality that helped shape their learning. I think this also applies to everyone, working or not working, old or young. That is why we keep on searching for information, looking for things to occupy ourselves with, and at the same time improving who we are and developing our skills. This sort of Transformation does not only happen in school but also in other activities where learning happens, either great or small. That is why there is a Galatea inside of us if we only allow ourselves to see what we can develop and make us better persons. In UA&P, we are told that our CAS subjects enable us to become well-rounded persons where we do not only focus our knowledge on a single subject but also traverse the knowledge across different subjects.

It has scared us to death more than the boogeymans in the closet, more than the m00-moos or monsters that all our parents talk about! Now it's payback time! HAHA! it's time to outwit, outplay and outsmart MATH! Give this one a good laugh. I can't promise you'll be better at math after viewing this, but at least, you know there are millions out there who are challenged too! Even UA&P scholars! :D

Kudos Charlene for these words of wisdom. :) You see, studying in UA&P not only hones our skills and feeds our minds with intelligence. NO. That is not the UA&P opportunity. We've all heard about it: HOLISTIC education. Being in UA&P is not just about studying. It's not just about making friends, being in the varsity or other co-curriculars. It's about being able to know what you are capable of as a student and individual. In UA&P you discover what you are made of, do what you can do, and develop society with your full capacity.
This is the UA&P opportunity: affecting change in society... changing lives... MAKING A DIFFERENCE.

Do you know that there is a total of 62 (CAS only) scholars in UA&P?
Some of them come from the provinces and some live along Metro Manila.
They are my schoolmates who will do their best just to maintain a grade that would help them retain their scholarship program in UA&P
Some of my scholar batch mates are currently taking their majors in their respective programs in UA&P.

how's your experience with isko?
"It was worth while. I got to bond and share experiences with fellow scholars. It was also a good avenue to ask for help from upper class men (scholars as well) regarding maintaining good academic habits, coping up with the pressure of maintaining an average, and other things as well. Moreover, I also received some privileges which i am thankful for such as photocopy subsidies and increase in the number of allowable book borrowings."
how long have you been a member of isko?
"I've been a member of ISKO for three years."
how do you give back to society the benefits you reap from being a scholar?
"At present, i might not be able to financially repay the school for the scholarship that i have received. however, i deem that by doing my part in maintaining a good academic standing is already a way of repayment in such a way that i can serve as a model to other students. furthermore, i also engage myself in volunteer activities such as working under Kultura and doing some work for the Admission office since i can also repay the school in this manner. More than the previous ways aforementioned of giving back the benefits of being a scholar, i think that by being of service and helping my schoolmates (batch mates or lower class men) is still the best way of giving back to society the benefits i received."
what are your dreams/goals in life?
"Its part of my goal in life to acquire a stable and high-paying job. However, it has always been my dream to experience Japanese culture at its finest and in lieu of this, i am really hoping to live and work in japan someday."

This post is dedicated to all the readers and will be readers of this blog. Part of the UA&P community or not, UA&P scholar or not. You see, when you pursue with something like this, a blog that actually aims for something, you need to find inspiration - you need to have inspiration. Otherwise, you stop and think and question yourself, why on earth are you still pursuing with this? You find inspiration from yourself, from your beliefs, from others and other's beliefs, or from just anywhere you can dig it up from! But i want to say that PROJECT ISKO has found it in you! YES YOU! The one reading this right now! With your readrship views and comments, we found that this challenge is not impossible after all. It may be hard, but nobody said it's going to be easy. We just have to keep on going and going and going. Til we make it. So i guess, the point of this is just to thank all of you, and ask for your continuing support. You have inspired us... We hope we've inspired you too. Continue reading us up and continue expressing your views and opinions... Let's all work together for the cause of this blog. WARNING: This is a pretty long post, but please read through it. It will enlighten and uplift the UA&P student in you. You would wish to hug UAPPY after!

I was rummaging through my very cluttered inbox of email messages and found a very interesting email that was sent to me more than a year ago by a classmate. I think it's going to strike you the same way it struck me.

We are proud of the fact that the University calls upon all its students to lead and be involved in extra curricular activities, due to our small population, students are tasked with being in varsity teams, a student organization and having to cope with the ever increasing standards of “retention” at the University. We are proud of the fact that our athletes are REAL students, devoid of special favors and academic incentives. We are proud of the fact that although many of our students are blessed with material wealth, we never forget the fact that to those that much is given, much is expected in return.

We do have an identity and there is much to be proud of at the University. If only we stopped looking over our shoulder to see what the other universities were doing, we’d realize that our University is truly something to be proud of. Rekindle the fire that burns within, realize the wealth of education that the University has imparted on you. We have our own identity, and it should be one that we choose to have.
